Pest Expert Overview: Springtails in Bryan & College Station
Springtails are tiny wingless insects about 6 mm in length. There are 2 groups of springtails, globular and linear. We most commonly see linear springtails in Central Texas homes. They are cylindrical in shape and vary greatly in color. They are occasionally mistaken for fleas because they have the ability to hop using a spring-like mechanism on the end of their abdomen. However, they are much smaller than fleas and do not bite. Springtails are thought to be the most abundant macroscopic organism on Earth. They can be found all over the world, sometimes at densities of 100,000 individuals per square meter of soil.
Life Cycle
Damp soil with lots of decaying organic matter is where springtails thrive. Most species are detritivores (feeding on decaying organic) and microbivores (feeding on microbes and fungi). Occasionally, they may feed on living plants. They can be found in homes in potted plants or invading indoors in high moisture conditions. They usually are unable to thrive indoors, unless in potted plants. Their development process is egg – nymph – adult, meaning the immature form is similar in appearance to the adult, only smaller. This process takes around 8 weeks, depending on environmental conditions.
Why are they Pests?
As detritivores, springtails are very important in the health of soil. Springtails do not bite or sting, but they can become a nuisance in homes when high moisture, heat, and abundant food causes populations to explode. They’ll mostly be noticed near moisture, so in kitchens, bathrooms, and near exterior doors or windows.
