House spiders, Parasteotoda tepidariorum, are those tiny little spiders that you can find in corners and cracks and crevices in your house. They have a dull brown mottled appearance, but are so small that they generally just appear brown in color.
They are found all over the world, living in close association with human habitation. House spiders are the most commonly encountered spiders in the home, but they are also considered to be the least aggressive.
Life Cycle
House spiders are the most likely source of the cobwebs you find around the house. They build these messy webs to capture their prey, which include mosquitoes, flies, ants and other small insects or invertebrates. Females produce as many as 20 eggs sacs per year that contain up to 200 eggs. Adults live for about a year.
Why are they Pests?
House spiders are beneficial in that they are predators of other insect pests. However, the cobwebs and mess they create when consuming their prey are considered a nuisance. House spiders are docile and will only bite if they are handled roughly. The bite is not dangerous, but can be quite painful.
House Spider Prevention
Preventing house spiders mainly involves frequent sweeping of cracks and crevices around the house. We have found that our treatments indoors keep house spiders away for around a year.
