Aphids can cover a plant before most people notice the insects. The first clues often appear as sticky leaves, black sooty mold, or heavy ant activity in the branches. Look beneath the leaves and along tender new growth, and you may find clusters of tiny insects feeding together.
Around Bryan, College Station, and the rest of Brazos County, we deal with aphids most often on crape myrtle trees. Many other plant species can support aphids, but they don’t all host the same species. Correct identification matters because each aphid has its own preferred plants, seasonal pattern, and potential for damage.

How to Recognize Aphids
Aphids are small insects with soft, often pear shaped bodies. Depending on the species and life stage, they may appear green, yellow, brown, gray, black, pink, or nearly white. Most measure less than one eighth inch long, so a single aphid is easy to overlook. A colony clustered along a stem or beneath a leaf is much easier to see.
Two short tubes called cornicles project from the rear of most aphids and provide an important identification clue. Piercing mouthparts reach into the plant’s vascular system and draw out sap.
A colony may contain wingless and winged adults. Wingless females build local numbers quickly. Crowding, declining plant quality, weather, or other conditions can produce winged forms that disperse to new plants.

Why Populations Grow So Quickly
Aphids use one of the most remarkable reproductive systems in the insect world. During favorable weather, females of many species give birth to live female young without mating. Those daughters soon begin producing young of their own.
The biology goes even further. A developing female may already contain embryos beginning the next generation. Entomologists call this telescoping generations. It helps a few nearly invisible insects become a dense colony quickly.
Warm weather and tender plant growth can accelerate the increase. Rain, extreme heat, predators, parasites, and disease can reverse it just as quickly.
Crape Myrtle Aphids in the Brazos Valley
The crape myrtle aphid, Tinocallis kahawaluokalani, causes most of the aphid calls we receive from local landscapes. These pale yellowish green insects feed on the undersides of crape myrtle leaves, where people rarely look until the tree and everything below it becomes sticky.
Crape myrtle is this species’ only known host. Aphids on roses, vegetables, pecans, citrus, and other plants belong to different species, even when they produce similar symptoms.
NC State Extension’s crape myrtle pest guide describes the aphid’s pale color, lower leaf feeding, honeydew, and sooty mold. Established crape myrtles usually survive, but heavy populations can interfere with leaf function and contribute to early leaf drop.
Honeydew Makes a Small Insect Obvious
Plant sap contains more water and sugar than an aphid needs. The insect releases the excess as honeydew, a clear liquid that coats the plant and falls onto patios, vehicles, furniture, and sidewalks below.
People sometimes assume a tree is leaking sap. In reality, thousands of aphids may be feeding overhead. A shiny or sticky surface beneath a crape myrtle offers a strong reason to inspect the lower leaf surfaces.
Scale insects, whiteflies, and mealybugs also produce honeydew, so stickiness alone doesn’t confirm aphids. On crape myrtles, bark scale can create similar honeydew and black growth. The insects’ location and appearance separate the problems.
Ants Follow the Sugar
Honeydew provides an abundant food source for many ants. Workers travel up the trunk, collect the liquid, and return it to their colony. Some ants protect aphids from predators in exchange for that dependable supply of sugar.
This relationship can connect a tree problem to ant activity inside a nearby building. I often find a crape myrtle directly outside the wall where a customer has found acrobat ants or their frass indoors. Rover ants and other sugar feeding ants also use this resource.
In those cases, treating only the ants that appear indoors ignores an important part of the property. Reducing the nearby food source can support the broader ant management plan.
Sooty Mold Grows on the Residue
Black sooty mold often follows honeydew. The fungus grows on the sugary coating rather than invading the plant’s living tissue. That distinction matters because the black layer is a symptom of sap feeding insects, not the primary pest.
A light coating mainly affects appearance. A heavy layer can block sunlight, reduce photosynthesis, and cover everything beneath the canopy.
Once the insects stop producing fresh honeydew, weather gradually breaks down the remaining residue. University of Georgia Extension explains the connection among sap feeding insects, honeydew, and sooty mold. Cleaning the black material without addressing the insects only treats the evidence.
Different Plants Support Different Species
The aphid family contains thousands of species. Some feed on many plant families. Others specialize on one plant or a small group, which explains why aphids may cover one tree while leaving its neighbor untouched.
Feeding removes plant resources and can curl, yellow, or distort tender growth. Large colonies cause greater concern on young, drought stressed, newly transplanted, or otherwise weakened plants.
Some agricultural species transmit plant viruses, making even small populations economically important. Virus transmission rarely drives our crape myrtle work, but it shows why “aphid” doesn’t describe one uniform risk.
From Melons to Wheat to Cotton
Aphids were part of my entomology education long before I started Venus Pest Company. During summers in high school, I worked with Dr. Bob Cartwright at the Wes Watkins Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Oklahoma. We did extensive aphid research on melons, including work with the cotton or melon aphid, Aphis gossypii.
That experience continued in college when I worked with Dr. James Webster at USDA Agricultural Research Service on the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia. USDA ARS describes his research, including the screening of thousands of wheat and barley accessions for resistance.
Later, at Zeneca Ag Products, I helped develop and evaluate products for cotton aphid research. Across melons, wheat, cotton, and ornamental trees, the insects shared a basic feeding strategy but created very different research and management questions.
That background still shapes how I look at a sticky crape myrtle. The plant, aphid species, weather, natural enemies, and surrounding landscape all matter. Good aphid work starts with that biology.
Natural Enemies Often Catch Up
Lady beetle adults and larvae eat aphids, as do lacewing larvae and the larvae of flower flies. Tiny parasitic wasps develop inside aphids and leave behind swollen, tan or bronze bodies called mummies. Fungal diseases can also spread through crowded colonies during favorable weather.
These natural enemies sometimes control a population without professional service. Their response usually trails behind the initial increase, so the plant may look worse before they catch up.
University of Minnesota Extension provides photographs of common aphid enemies. Finding them on a healthy plant may support continued observation while the natural control system works.
Why Some Infestations Need Attention
Not every colony warrants control. A vigorous plant may tolerate a few insects while beneficial species catch up. Concern increases when colonies cover new growth, leaves curl or drop, honeydew creates a mess, sooty mold spreads, or ants interfere with natural enemies.
Plant condition matters as much as insect count. A mature crape myrtle tolerates more feeding than a recent transplant or a tree already struggling with drought, root damage, or another stress.
Location matters too. Honeydew over mulch creates a different problem than the same amount coating a restaurant entrance, vehicles, pool furniture, or a front walk.
Practical Ways to Reduce Pressure
Inspect tender growth and leaf undersides before honeydew covers everything below. Ant trails, shiny foliage, shed skins, and early sooty mold can reveal activity.
Avoid excessive fertilizer that forces soft, nitrogen rich growth where aphids often reproduce well. Appropriate irrigation and plant care help a tree tolerate feeding.
Preserve predators and parasites when they have a foothold. Indiscriminate control can remove the organisms that would otherwise slow the aphids. We don’t publish pesticide products, active ingredients, rates, mixing directions, or homeowner application recommendations. The plant, pest, beneficial insects, weather, and site all affect a responsible decision.

Are aphids harmful to people or pets?
No. They don’t bite or sting people or pets, and they don’t infest buildings. Their piercing mouthparts feed on plants. The mess from honeydew and sooty mold creates the most common concern around homes.
Why is everything beneath my tree sticky?
Sap feeding insects release excess sugar and water as honeydew. Crape myrtle aphids often produce enough to coat leaves, vehicles, patios, furniture, and plants beneath the canopy.
What is the black coating on the leaves?
It is usually sooty mold growing on honeydew. The fungus uses the sugary residue rather than feeding directly on living plant tissue, but a heavy coating can block light and reduce photosynthesis.
Why are ants running up and down the trunk?
They may be collecting honeydew from aphids, scale insects, whiteflies, or mealybugs. Some ants also protect those insects from predators. The trail provides a clue, but an inspection must identify the actual honeydew producer.
Will they kill my crape myrtle?
Established crape myrtles usually survive aphid feeding. Heavy populations can reduce vigor, coat the tree with honeydew and sooty mold, and contribute to early leaf drop. Young or stressed trees have less capacity to tolerate the feeding.
How did the population appear so quickly?
During favorable conditions, many female aphids produce live female young without mating. Their daughters mature quickly and repeat the process, allowing several overlapping generations to build in a short period.
Does every colony require control?
No. A healthy plant may tolerate a small colony while predators and parasites build around it. Plant stress, distorted growth, extensive honeydew, heavy sooty mold, location, and the number of beneficial insects help determine whether action makes sense.
Does regular pest control include aphids?
