Pest Expert Overview: Wood Cockroaches in Bryan & College Station
Wood cockroaches are outdoor cockroaches that occasionally wander or fly into homes and businesses in Bryan and College Station.
The name wood cockroach refers to a group of closely related species rather than one specific insect. Most of the wood cockroaches found in Texas belong to the genus Parcoblatta. They are in the Order Blattodea and the Family Ectobiidae.
Wood cockroaches normally live in wooded areas, leaf litter, decaying logs, tree holes, loose bark, woodpiles, and other outdoor habitats containing moisture and decomposing organic material. They are beneficial outdoors because they help break down dead plant material.
They sometimes enter structures through doors, windows, vents, and other openings. Adult males of some species are capable flyers and are strongly attracted to exterior lights at night.
Wood cockroaches are not among the most common cockroaches we encounter inside buildings in Bryan and College Station, but we do occasionally find them. Correct identification is important because they can be confused with German cockroaches, which are a much more serious indoor pest.
Identifying Wood Cockroaches
Wood cockroaches vary in appearance because several species may be encountered.
Adults are generally light reddish-brown to dark brown. Depending on the species and sex, they may range from approximately ½ inch to more than an inch long.
Male wood cockroaches usually have long, fully developed wings extending over most or all of the abdomen. Females may have shorter wings or be almost wingless, depending on the species.
Many male wood cockroaches are flattened, light brown, and similar enough in size and shape to German cockroaches that they are easily confused.
German cockroaches are usually light brown and have two dark, parallel stripes on the shield like section directly behind the head. They are primarily indoor insects and are most commonly found in kitchens, bathrooms, restaurants, apartments, and other warm areas close to food and water.
Wood cockroaches do not always have the two clearly defined stripes found on German cockroaches, although their markings vary enough that identification from color alone can be difficult.
Behavior and location provide additional clues.
A cockroach that flies toward a porch light, lands near an exterior door, or appears singly inside a wooded home may be a wood cockroach.
German cockroaches are not strong flyers. They normally hide in tight indoor cracks near food, heat, and moisture. Finding several cockroaches of different sizes in a kitchen is much more consistent with German cockroaches than wood cockroaches.
A clear photograph or collected specimen is often necessary for a confident identification.
Life Cycle
Wood cockroaches develop gradually through three stages: egg, nymph, and adult.
Females produce their eggs inside a capsule called an ootheca. The egg cases are deposited in protected outdoor locations such as beneath bark, inside decaying wood, or among leaf litter.
The eggs hatch into small, wingless nymphs. Nymphs resemble smaller versions of the adults and grow through a series of molts.
Wood cockroach nymphs feed on decomposing leaves, wood, fungi, and other organic material. They normally remain outdoors where moisture is available.
Depending on the species, development may take several months or more than a year. Many wood cockroaches spend the winter as nymphs before becoming adults during spring or summer.
Adult males are usually more active and more likely to be seen than females. Males may fly while searching for mates and are frequently attracted to lights at night.
Where Are Wood Cockroaches Found?
Wood cockroaches are strongly associated with moist outdoor habitats containing dead plant material.
Common habitats include:
- Decaying logs and stumps
- Loose tree bark
- Hollow trees
- Leaf litter
- Woodpiles
- Mulched planting beds
- Dense ground cover
- Compost piles
- Lumber stored outdoors
- Debris beneath decks
- Damp crawl spaces
- Wooded areas surrounding homes
They are most likely to enter homes located near woods, greenbelts, large trees, or accumulations of firewood and organic debris.
Adult males may fly toward porch lights, illuminated windows, garage lights, and open doorways. Others are carried indoors with firewood, boxes, lumber, camping equipment, or outdoor furniture.
Wood cockroaches may also enter beneath poorly sealed doors or through damaged screens and gaps around windows.
Wood Cockroaches Versus German Cockroaches
Wood cockroaches are occasionally mistaken for German cockroaches because some species are similar in size and color.
The distinction is important because the two groups behave very differently.
Wood cockroaches:
- Normally live and reproduce outdoors
- Are associated with wood, bark, leaves, and other decaying material
- Frequently occur as isolated adults indoors
- May fly and are often attracted to lights
- Usually do not survive long in the dry conditions inside a home
- Rarely establish an indoor breeding population
German cockroaches:
- Live and reproduce primarily indoors
- Prefer kitchens, bathrooms, appliances, cabinets, and plumbing areas
- Are usually found near food, warmth, and moisture
- Commonly occur in groups containing adults and nymphs
- Do not normally fly through the house
- Can establish large, persistent indoor infestations
Wood cockroaches generally die within a few days after entering a dry indoor environment because they require the moisture and habitat found outdoors. Their presence indoors is objectionable, but they are not considered an indoor pest in the same way as German cockroaches.
Finding one light brown cockroach does not automatically mean that a home has German cockroaches.
However, identification should not be based on wishful thinking either. Several German cockroaches of different sizes around a kitchen should not be dismissed as harmless outdoor insects.
Why They are Pests
Wood cockroaches are beneficial decomposers in their natural outdoor habitat.
They become pests when they enter homes, garages, offices, or other buildings. A flying cockroach inside a bedroom or living room is understandably alarming, regardless of whether it intends to remain there.
The main problem caused by wood cockroaches is their presence.
They do not normally reproduce indoors, infest food storage cabinets, or establish large populations inside clean, dry homes.
A single adult near a door or window usually represents an accidental invader rather than an infestation.
Repeated sightings may indicate that large numbers are living immediately outside the structure or that lighting and entry points are drawing them indoors.
Finding nymphs indoors deserves closer attention. Nymphs cannot fly, so they may have been carried inside with firewood or another outdoor item. Their presence may also indicate a damp crawl space, accumulated organic debris, or another sheltered habitat connected to the structure.
Wood cockroaches can carry microorganisms from decaying outdoor material onto indoor surfaces, but they are not considered the same sanitation threat as German cockroaches living and feeding throughout a kitchen.
Wood Cockroach Prevention and Control
Wood cockroach prevention focuses on reducing outdoor harborages, limiting attraction to lights, and preventing accidental entry.
Homeowners can help reduce wood cockroach activity by:
- Moving firewood away from the house
- Storing firewood above the ground
- Bringing indoors only the amount of firewood that will be used promptly
- Removing decaying logs, stumps, and unnecessary lumber near the structure
- Raking excessive leaf litter away from the foundation
- Avoiding thick layers of mulch directly against the house
- Removing debris from beneath decks and porches
- Trimming dense vegetation near doors and windows
- Repairing moisture problems around crawl spaces
- Allowing damp shaded areas near the foundation to dry when practical
Outdoor lighting is one of the most common reasons adult males approach buildings.
Reduce unnecessary exterior lighting during periods when wood cockroaches are active. Porch lights can be turned off when they are not needed, or fixtures can be positioned farther from doors.
Keeping bright lights directly beside an open doorway is essentially advertising available indoor real estate to every flying insect in the yard.
Exclusion is also important.
Inspect and repair:
- Torn window and door screens
- Gaps beneath exterior doors
- Worn weather stripping
- Cracks around windows
- Openings around utility lines
- Unscreened vents
- Gaps around garage doors
- Openings between siding and foundations
Door sweeps should fit tightly enough to block insects from crawling underneath.
Inspect firewood, boxes, camping equipment, outdoor decorations, and furniture before bringing them inside.
What Should You Do If You Find One Indoors?
One suspected wood cockroach can usually be removed with a vacuum or captured for identification.
Whenever possible, save the specimen or take a clear, well lit photograph from directly above. Important markings may not be visible in a blurry photograph taken from across the room.
The location and circumstances are also useful.
A single flying cockroach near a porch door after dark suggests something very different from several cockroaches of different sizes beneath a kitchen appliance.
Sticky traps placed near exterior doors, garages, and suspected entry points can help determine whether additional cockroaches are present.
Repeated indoor sightings, nymphs, or activity centered around kitchens and bathrooms should be professionally identified. Mistaking German cockroaches for wood cockroaches can allow a serious infestation to grow. Mistaking wood cockroaches for German cockroaches can lead to unnecessary concern and indoor treatment.
