Elongate twig ants, also known as Pseudomyrmex gracilis, are a species of ants found throughout Central and South America and part of the United State, including Texas. These ants are about 8-10 mm in length, and are characterized by their slender and elongated bodies, which are usually brown or reddish-brown in color. They are also commonly referred to as “twig ants” due to their habit of nesting in the hollow twigs of trees and shrubs.

Life Cycle
The life cycle of elongate twig ants begins with the mating of the queen and male ants. After mating, the queen lays eggs, which hatch into larvae. The larvae are fed by worker ants until they pupate and emerge as adult ants. The development of these ants from egg to adult takes around 2-3 months.
Why are they Pests?
Elongate twig ants can be considered pests because they have a tendency to invade homes and buildings, searching for food and water sources. They can also cause damage to vegetation and trees, as they have a mutualistic relationship with certain plant species. In this relationship, the ants protect the plant from herbivorous insects in exchange for food and shelter. Finally, while not aggressive, they do have a painful sting.
