Pest Expert Overview: Flour Beetles in Bryan & College Station
Red flour beetles and confused flour beetles are closely related stored product pests commonly found in flour, cereal, baking products, pet food, and other dry foods. They are among the most important pests of flour mills, food processing facilities, warehouses, grocery stores, and residential pantries.
The two species are nearly identical in appearance, biology, and feeding habits. They are normally grouped together because distinguishing between them rarely changes the control recommendations inside a home.
Adult flour beetles are small, slender beetles measuring approximately 1/8 inch long. They are reddish-brown, somewhat flattened, and have bodies with nearly parallel sides.
The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, and confused flour beetle, Tribolium confusum, are in the Order Coleoptera and the Family Tenebrionidae.
Flour beetles are normally brought into a home inside an infested food product. They do not usually enter from outdoors and then decide to invade the pantry.
Identifying Red and Confused Flour Beetles
Red and confused flour beetles are extremely difficult to distinguish without magnification.
The most useful difference involves the antennae.
The antennae of red flour beetles end in a distinct three segmented club. The antennae of confused flour beetles gradually enlarge toward the tip and do not form a sharply defined club.
Their heads also differ slightly. The ridge above each eye of a red flour beetle does not extend completely across the head. On a confused flour beetle, the ridges continue farther inward and nearly meet.
These are not practical characteristics for most homeowners to examine without magnification and some experience identifying stored product insects.
There is one behavioral difference that can occasionally be useful. Red flour beetles have functional wings and can fly under warm conditions. Confused flour beetles cannot fly.
Red flour beetles are generally more common in homes, particularly in warmer regions such as Texas. Confused flour beetles are frequently associated with flour mills and other commercial food facilities.
Fortunately, determining which species is present normally does not change the solution. Finding the food in which the beetles are developing is far more important than separating two almost identical insects.
Life Cycle
Red and confused flour beetles undergo complete metamorphosis and develop through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
Adult females deposit tiny white eggs loosely throughout a food product. The eggs are sticky and quickly become covered with flour or food particles, making them difficult to see.
The eggs hatch into small, slender larvae. Flour beetle larvae are yellowish-white to light brown and have brown heads. A pair of short, dark projections is visible near the end of the abdomen.
Unlike grain weevils, flour beetle larvae do not develop inside individual kernels. They crawl freely through the food and feed as they grow.
When fully developed, the larvae pupate loosely within the food or nearby debris. They do not usually construct a substantial cocoon.
Development may be completed in approximately one month under warm, favorable conditions. Cooler temperatures and poor quality food can extend the life cycle considerably.
Adults can live for many months, and females continue laying eggs throughout much of their lives. This allows populations to become very large when an infested product remains undisturbed.
Both the larvae and adults feed.
What Do Flour Beetles Eat?
Despite their name, flour beetles are not limited to flour.
Commonly infested products include:
- Flour and cornmeal
- Cake, pancake, and baking mixes
- Breakfast cereal
- Oatmeal
- Pasta
- Crackers and cookies
- Bread crumbs
- Rice and cracked grain
- Nuts and seeds
- Dried fruit
- Chocolate and cocoa
- Spices
- Dry pet food
- Pet treats
- Bird seed
- Fish food
- Rodent bait
Flour beetles are secondary stored product pests. They generally cannot penetrate and develop inside hard, undamaged grain kernels.
They feed most successfully on flour, meal, processed grain products, broken kernels, grain dust, and products previously damaged by grain weevils or other primary pests.
Adult beetles may be found in bags of whole grain, but their presence usually indicates that kernels are cracked, processed, or already damaged.
Flour beetles may also feed on dried plant material, dried flowers, beans, chocolate, and some dried animal products.
Why They are Pests
Red and confused flour beetles do not bite, sting, damage clothing, or feed on the structure of a home. Their importance comes from their ability to contaminate stored food.
Both the larvae and adults feed within food products. They leave behind eggs, feces, shed skins, dead insects, and insect fragments.
Flour beetles can also release defensive chemicals known as quinones. In heavily infested products, these chemicals may produce a sharp, unpleasant odor and give the food a pinkish discoloration or bitter taste.
Large infestations can reduce food quality and make products unsuitable for use even when the amount actually consumed by the insects is relatively small.
Their narrow bodies allow them to crawl through small gaps in packaging. They may enter boxes through folded seams, gaps around closures, damaged plastic, or tiny openings that are difficult to see.
Some infestations begin before a product reaches the home. Others spread when beetles leave one package and crawl or fly into nearby food.
Red flour beetles may fly and can be found around windows, walls, ceilings, or light fixtures. Confused flour beetles cannot fly but are active crawlers.
Finding beetles away from the pantry does not necessarily mean the infestation originated in that room. The insects may have dispersed a considerable distance from an infested product elsewhere in the house.
Flour Beetle Prevention and Control
The most important step in controlling flour beetles is locating and removing the infested food.
Spraying the adults crawling around a kitchen may kill those individual beetles, but it will not eliminate the eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults still developing inside food packages.
Inspect all susceptible products in the pantry and nearby storage areas. Look for:
- Living adult beetles
- Small yellowish larvae
- Shed skins
- Dead insects
- Powdery food debris
- Clumped or discolored food
- Holes or damage in packaging
- Beetles trapped along package seams
- An unusual sharp or unpleasant odor
Pay particular attention to flour, cornmeal, cereal, baking mixes, crackers, pasta, spices, nuts, pet food, and products that have been stored for a long time.
Old bags of flour and partially used baking ingredients pushed to the back of a cabinet are common sources.
Do not overlook food stored outside the kitchen. Pet food, bird seed, fish food, animal feed, and rodent bait stored in garages, closets, utility rooms, or laundry rooms should also be inspected.
Infested products should be placed inside a sealed bag and removed from the house.
After removing the source:
- Vacuum pantry shelves, corners, cracks, and shelf pin holes.
- Clean beneath removable shelves and shelf liners.
- Remove spilled flour, cereal, pet food, and other food debris.
- Inspect nearby packages before returning them to the pantry.
- Dispose of the vacuum contents outside.
- Wipe down shelves and allow them to dry completely.
- Store susceptible foods in tightly sealed glass or heavy plastic containers.
- Avoid keeping old or rarely used dry products indefinitely.
Do not stop inspecting after finding the first infested package. Flour beetles can move between products, and several packages may be involved.
Questionable products can sometimes be frozen to kill developing insects. However, freezing does not remove feces, shed skins, dead beetles, defensive secretions, or other contamination already present.
Most inexpensive infested food should simply be discarded.
Heating may also kill stored product insects, but the entire product must reach a lethal temperature for the required amount of time. Placing a package in a hot garage, attic, vehicle, or direct sunlight is not a dependable treatment.
Insecticide applications inside food storage cabinets are generally unnecessary.
Pesticides should never be applied directly to food, food packaging, or food contact surfaces unless the product label specifically allows that use.
Crack and crevice treatments may occasionally be useful in severe commercial infestations, but pesticides do not replace inspection, source removal, and sanitation.
The treatment that solves the problem is finding where the flour beetles are developing.
It is normal to continue seeing occasional adults for a short period after the source has been removed. Beetles that had already left the product may continue wandering through the house.
Continued or increasing activity usually means another infested product or accumulation of food debris has been overlooked.
Preventing Flour Beetles
Inspect dry food products before purchasing them whenever possible. Avoid packages that are torn, damaged, leaking food dust, or have insects visible inside.
Once products are brought home:
- Transfer flour, cornmeal, cereal, baking mixes, and similar foods into sealed containers.
- Clean spilled food promptly.
- Wash and dry storage containers before refilling them.
- Do not add new food on top of an older product.
- Purchase quantities that can be used within a reasonable period.
- Rotate stored products so older food is used first.
- Inspect pet food and bird seed before placing them into storage.
- Discard old products that are unlikely to be used.
Sealed containers may not prevent an infestation that was already developing inside a product when it was purchased. However, they will contain emerging beetles and prevent them from spreading into surrounding foods.
Professional Flour Beetle Control
Flour beetle infestations can be difficult to locate because the insects feed on many different products and can move through very small openings.
The source may be an obvious bag of flour, but it may also be cereal, baking mix, spices, nuts, dry pet food, bird seed, rodent bait, or food debris beneath shelving.
A professional inspection can help confirm the identification, distinguish flour beetles from other pantry pests, locate overlooked food sources, and determine whether the infestation has spread into multiple products.
