Pest Expert Overview: Indianmeal Moths in Bryan & College Station
Indianmeal moths are the small moths most commonly found flying around kitchens and pantries. They are often called pantry moths, although several other moth and beetle species can infest stored food products. Adult Indianmeal moths are about 1/2 inch long when resting. The portion of each wing closest to the body is light gray or tan, while the outer portion is reddish-brown or copper colored. This two toned appearance makes them fairly easy to identify.
Indianmeal moths, Plodia interpunctella, are in the Order Lepidoptera and the Family Pyralidae. Despite their name, they did not originate in India. The name refers to “Indian meal,” an older term for cornmeal.
Indianmeal moths are commonly brought into homes inside an infested food product. They do not normally fly into your house and then decide to invade the pantry. The infestation may have begun at a food processing facility, warehouse, grocery store, pet store, or anywhere else the product was stored before reaching your home.
Life Cycle
Indianmeal moths undergo complete metamorphosis and develop through four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
Adult females lay tiny eggs on or near a suitable food source. The eggs hatch into small caterpillars, which are the stage responsible for all of the feeding and food damage. The larvae can be white, cream, pinkish, or pale green and have a distinct brown head.
Indianmeal moth larvae feed on an unusually wide variety of dry products, including cereal, flour, cornmeal, oatmeal, rice, pasta, nuts, dried fruit, chocolate, spices, bird seed, grass seed, fish food, and dry dog or cat food. We frequently find that the original source is something used less often and forgotten in the back of a cabinet. Decorative corn, dried peppers, rodent bait, and old pet treats should not be overlooked.
As they feed, the larvae produce silk that causes food particles to stick together. Webbing inside a package, especially around the corners or seams, is one of the best indications that a product is infested.
Mature larvae usually leave the food and crawl away before pupating. They may travel surprisingly long distances and are often found crawling up walls or across ceilings. They form small silken cocoons in cabinet corners, shelf pin holes, cracks, under the edges of shelves, or where walls meet the ceiling. This wandering behavior is why the moths may appear in rooms located away from the pantry.
Development can take a little more than a month under warm, favorable conditions but takes much longer when temperatures are cooler or food quality is poor.
Why They are Pests
Indianmeal moths do not bite, sting, damage clothing, or feed on the structure of your home. Their importance as pests comes from their ability to contaminate food.
The larvae leave behind webbing, feces, shed skins, and insect fragments as they feed. Once a product is infested, it should usually be discarded.
A single overlooked package can continually produce moths for several months. This often leads homeowners to believe the moths are entering through a door, drain, attic, or air conditioning vent. In reality, the source is almost always a dry food product somewhere in the house.
The product does not have to be open. Larvae can enter through very small gaps in packaging, and some can chew through paper, cardboard, and thin plastic. A box or bag that appears sealed should not automatically be considered safe.
Indianmeal Moth Prevention and Control
The most important part of Indianmeal moth control is locating and removing the infested food. Spraying the moths flying around the kitchen may kill a few adults, but it will not eliminate larvae developing inside a package.
Inspect every susceptible product in the pantry and nearby cabinets. Look for webbing, clumped food, caterpillars, shed skins, small holes in packaging, or moths inside the package. Do not limit the inspection to flour and cereal. Check nuts, spices, baking products, dried fruit, candy, pet food, bird seed, fish food, and any dried plant material stored inside the home.
Infested products should be placed in a sealed bag and removed from the house. Products that are questionable but worth keeping can sometimes be frozen to kill developing insects. However, freezing will not remove webbing, feces, or other contamination already present in the food.
After the source has been removed:
- Vacuum shelves, corners, cracks, shelf pin holes, and the edges around cabinets.
- Remove spilled flour, grain, pet food, and other food debris.
- Dispose of the vacuum contents outside.
- Store susceptible foods in tightly sealed glass or heavy plastic containers.
- Inspect pet food and bird seed before bringing them into the house.
- Avoid keeping old or rarely used dry products indefinitely.
Pheromone traps can be useful for monitoring Indianmeal moth activity. They attract and capture adult male moths, which can help determine whether moths are still present. However, traps do not attract larvae or female moths and should not be considered a substitute for finding the infested product.
Insecticide applications inside food storage cabinets are generally unnecessary and are not the primary solution. Finding the source, removing contaminated food, and thoroughly cleaning the area are what solve the problem.
It is also normal to continue seeing a few adult moths after the infested product has been removed. Larvae may have already wandered away and formed cocoons in other parts of the kitchen or house. These remaining moths should gradually disappear as long as another food source has not been overlooked.
