Ground beetles are probably the most commonly encountered types of beetles found in Central Texas. There are more than 600 species that range widely in appearance from dull brown to bright green. Many are plain looking, while others are bizarre. Some of the cooler looking species include long-necked beetle, pendunculate ground beetle, caterpillar hunter, and oblong-punctate agra carabid.
Life Cycle
Ground beetles lay their eggs in the soil. The emerging larvae are usually subterranean and are predators of other insects. Adults tend to hide out under debris outside, coming out at night to prey on other insects. Adults can fly, but don’t do it often.
Why are they Pests?
Ground beetles are very important predators of other pest insects, particularly in agriculture and gardens. Some species are attracted to lights at night and can accidentally end up inside. They are unable to survive indoors for long. Some years the numbers of beetles coming to lights can create quite a nuisance for home owners.
