Pest Expert Overview: Buffalo Gnats in Bryan & College Station

Buffalo gnats, also known as black flies, are small but formidable pests that affect humans, livestock, and wildlife across various regions. Despite their minuscule size, these insects have a significant impact wherever they are found, due to their biting behavior and potential to transmit diseases.  They have been a problem in our area since 2012.  They usually go away by the end of May.

These small, humpbacked flies, typically measure between 2 to 5 mm in length. They are characterized by their dark color and distinctively large, clear wings. An interesting fact about these gnats is their name “buffalo,” which derives from the humpbacked appearance of the females, reminiscent of a buffalo’s silhouette.

These insects are most active during the daytime and are particularly prevalent near clean, fast-flowing rivers and streams, where they breed. Unlike mosquitoes that are attracted to stagnant water, buffalo gnats thrive in oxygen-rich environments. Their larvae attach to rocks and vegetation in the water, filtering food particles from the current.

Life Cycle

The life cycle of buffalo gnats is closely tied to aquatic environments. Females lay their eggs in or near flowing water, where the eggs hatch into larvae. These larvae are equipped with small hooks that allow them to anchor onto submerged objects, preventing them from being swept away by the current. As filter feeders, the larvae play a crucial role in the aquatic food chain, consuming organic debris and small organisms.

After several weeks, the larvae pupate, still attached to the underwater surfaces. The adult gnats emerge from the pupal stage and rise to the water’s surface, ready to start the cycle anew. The entire life cycle from egg to adult can vary from a few weeks to several months, depending on the species and environmental conditions.

Why are they Pests?

Buffalo gnats are considered pests primarily because of their biting behavior. Female gnats feed on blood, which is necessary for egg production. Their bites are not only painful but can also cause severe irritation and allergic reactions in some individuals and animals. In large numbers, buffalo gnats can cause significant distress to livestock, potentially leading to decreased productivity and, in extreme cases, death from excessive blood loss or allergic reactions.

Furthermore, buffalo gnats are vectors for several pathogens, capable of transmitting diseases to humans and animals. Their pest status is amplified in regions where they breed in large numbers, leading to swarms that can affect outdoor activities, agriculture, and livestock management.

Buffalo Gnat Prevention and Control

Managing buffalo gnat populations is challenging due to their breeding in flowing water, which limits the effectiveness of traditional insect control methods. However, certain strategies can help mitigate their impact:

  • Personal Protection: Wearing long sleeves, pants, and hats can provide a physical barrier against bites. Insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin can also be effective.
  • Environmental Management: Altering the landscape to disrupt breeding sites, such as removing vegetation from streams or modifying the flow of water, can reduce gnat populations.
  • Biological Control: Introducing natural predators of gnats, such as certain fish species that feed on larvae, can help keep their numbers in check.
  • Chemical Control: In some cases, authorities may use specific insecticides to target larvae in heavily affected areas. These treatments require careful application to avoid harming non-target species and the environment.

Unfortunately, we are not able to provide control of biting midges.  They are not normally a problem in our area, so our government doesn’t provide the large area treatments that would be needed to control them as they do in other parts of the U.S.  The females, which are the ones that bite, fly around 2 kilometers.  Mosquitoes, alternatively, fly short distances and land repeatedly.  That behavior makes it easy for us to control mosquitoes with foliar applications, but not so for the biting midges.  Also, biting midges tend to emerge in huge numbers and small area adult control efforts usually get overrun after about a day.
